Plant Your Roots is a campaign designed to position Friends of Hamilton Garden as an opportunity for the migrant community to foster a positive relationship with the Hamilton Gardens.
The campaign, designed by eleven University of Waikato students, will take place from Monday 21 August to Friday 29 September 2017. It will involve interacting with Hamilton's migrant population through social media channels and mass media. As part of this campaign, we will host a small event at the Hamilton Gardens; Leaf Your Mark. This will be a community mural painting event where everyone is able to place their finger in a paint pot of different shades of green, and place their fingerprint on a large piece of wood. This opportunity will allow you an opportunity to come together to create something beautiful in the heat of Hamilton. Read more about Leaf Your Mark here.
The migrant community of Hamilton have been selected as the target audience of this campaign as approximately 30,000 people, or 25% of Hamilton's overall population identify as a being apart of a culture or ethnicity besides New Zealand European or Maori. Research has shown that many migrants find it difficult to meet people outside of their existing ethnic communities, which can contribute to feelings of isolation and prevent full integration into New Zealand society. Additionally, 34 percent of Hamilton migrants say they do not have enough social interaction in their new community.
We, Plant Your Roots, would like to mitigate these feelings of isolation, by positioning the Friends of Hamilton Gardens as an opportunity for community involvement and social cohesion for the increasingly ethnically diverse population of Hamilton.
